Nou Camp hotels
Football fans won't need any introduction to the Nou Camp. It's one of the most famous stadiums in the world. Seating an amazing 120,000 people, plans are afoot to make the arena even more spectacular with a spiky new hedgehog-style facade in the pipeline.
The Nou Camp area is located north west of the city centre close to the main throroughfare of Diagonal. Close to the stadium there is a university campus giving the area a buzzy vibe all year round but especially on match days. Easily reached by metro, it's a leafy district and one of the city's wealthiest, offering plenty of beautiful hotels near the Nou Camp stadium.
Arriving to Barcelona from the South, the skyline is marked by the iconic Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I, one of the finest places to stay in the city. If you're going to splash out on the football, you'd be wise to splash out on a room in this hotel too!
Sights
The big draw of the Nou Camp area is the Nou Camp. The Nou Camp is home to the FC Barcelona football club. Football passions run high in the city due to the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barca for the league title every year. For the last two years Barca have come second and the city's fanatical supporters are not happy.
The club has a political aspect. During the Franco era, the club represented a point where Catalans could gather and thus assert their identity. Consequently the club has more than 100,000 members, more than any other city in Spain.
It there's a game in town, try and get tickets (if you can get them!) because the atmosphere in this stadium cannot be bettered. A distant second best is to get a feel for the club's rich history at the Museu del Barca at the club's grounds. There are team and match photos dating back to 1901.
Apart from the football, this well-to-do district offers other sights. Lavish royal palace Palau de Pedrables has beautiful gardens and exhibitions (it used to be home to the Spanish king). This palace can be handy place to send friends who are not as keen on the football as you may be!
Bars and restaurants
Close to the university, you can find good value bars and restaurants, while to the north of Diagonal the prices rise in line with the high property values of the area.
Getting there
For the stadium take the metro to Les Corts (Line 3) or Collblanc (Line 5) from the city centre.
