sitges

Just 40km from Barcelona, the beach town of Sitges has the ambiance of a high class resort. Transport links to the city are top class, and with a great range of hotels in Sitges you can combine relaxation on sandy beaches, bustling nightlife in the old town and have access to the centre of Barcelona by road or train.
Sitges is an easygoing town as laid back as the gentle waves that roll in from the Mediteranian sea. The centre is compact and easily seen by foot. Sitges is as popular with foreign tourists as with daytrippers from Barcelona. Avoid road trips to and from the town during the evening times at weekends when motorways can be gridlocked with holiday traffic.

Sights
Sitges has a medieval core of charming narrow winding streets filled with tapas bars, restaurants and pubs. Along the sea wall, an old church pokes out into the gentle waves rolling in from the Med. It's a charming place to go for an evening stroll.
Most people base themselves in Sitges for the beaches and laid back atmosphere, but there are a few museums worth a look if you can tear yourself away from the sun lounger! Museu Romantic (guided tour every hour) showcases the glamourous lifestyle of a rich Sitges family during the 18th and 19th centuries. Museu Cau Ferrat is a museum of sorts in the home of artist and writer Santiago Rusinol, a friend of Picasso´s. The museum has various bits and pieces from Rusinol´s life including ironwork from the Pyrenees and works by Picasso.

When to visit
A great time to visit is in February/March when the town celebrates the end of winter with Carnaval. The festival culminates in an exuberant parade. Sitges hotels and bars that have been closed over winter throw open their doors for the new season.
Even though Sitges is home to many commuters to Barcelona, the town makes much of its money from tourism so there are plenty of great Sitges hotels to be found at all times of year, especially along the beachfront. Tourists and locals, so laid back they are practically horizontal, mix easily.

Hotels in Sitges
The constant presence of visitors means there is no real ´off season´ in Sitges and any time of the year is good to visit, although hotels in Sitges are often full in Summer. Staff and bars and Sitges hotels are friendly and speak good English.

Who goes there
The town caters for diverse needs. As well as families and retired people, many Spanish celebrities and Barca footballers own luxury homes in the leafy streets surrounding the old town, giving place a glamourous atmosphere. The town is also popular with gay tourists due to the large number of gay bars and hotels in Sitges.

Getting to Sitges
Commuter trains run at high frequency to central Barcelona (stopping at Sants station and Placa Catalunya). Driving from Barcelona or the airport take the C32 motorway.
